Service plaza or rest area?

Service plazas sit directly on the highway, most of them on toll roads and turnpikes; Connecticut also has them on its free interstates. Unlike most state rest areas they usually have fuel stations, restaurants and shops, and they are run by the toll road operator, the state or a concessionaire. Many serve one direction only; some, like the oases on the Illinois Tollway, span the highway and serve both. Parking rules are set by the operator and can differ from the state rest area rules.

Frequently asked questions

Do service plazas have fuel?

Most service plazas on turnpikes have a fuel station along with restrooms and food. Check the individual location page for the facilities documented for each plaza.

Can you park overnight at a service plaza?

Rules are set by each toll road operator and are posted at the plaza. State rest area time limits do not automatically apply to turnpike service plazas.
